J Lee Mobile Unit Live @ Other Cinema/ATA

This was a very interesting night. Thanks to Craig Baldwin for having me. I’ve been wanting to do the “19th Century Light Show” for some time. The premiss being an all candle light show using my candelabra mobiles. The mobiles all have a life of their own and go with the drafts as well as the convection carousels built into the sculptures to keep perpetual motion. Sonically, I used an all analog modular synth with physical synthesis using a contact mic affixed to a painting knife, a motor for an alternative oscillator sound source and a live speaker for feedback howls. This all going through an analog delay and low pass filter for subsonic rumbles. I received a high compliment for a woman in the front row who said “you’re a magican.” Another audience member said I should use fans to juice up the motion of the mobiles. I actually had a small fan with me but it was just the next level of complication to set it up or I forgot. I thought about it and now I’m glad I didn’t use a fan. It was about slowing down time and the attention span to the point of discomfort. Just what we need in this spastic mediated present world. Recorded by Tom Scharff
